Dallas Cowboys Josh Brent arrested on Manslaughter Accident that killed linebacker Jerry Brown

Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was arrested on charges of intoxication manslaughter after flipping his car in Irving, Texas Saturday morning in an accident that killed Cowboys practice-squad player Jerry Brown, according to Irving police.

Per a police statement, Brent was driving his car at a high rate of speed at 2:21 a.m. when he hit the outside curb on Route 114, causing the vehicle to flip at least once and then come to rest in the middle of a service road. Brown, a linebacker who was signed to the practice squad in October, was a passenger in the car. Brown was unresponsive on the scene and transferred to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Responding officers believed alcohol to be a contributing factor. Brent did not pass sobriety tests and underwent a mandatory blood draw at a nearby hospital.

Brent previously plead guilty to a DUI charge in 2009 stemming from an arrest while he was played at the University of Illinois. According to court records in Champaign County, Ill., Brent was arrested on March 5, 2009 and plead guilty to a DUI charge on June 2, 2009.

Brent was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 200 hours of community service and two years probation. Brent was also ordered to attend a victim's impact panel.

The Cowboys team plane left for Sunday's game in Cincinnati after the team was informed.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown," team owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. "At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

Cowboys VP Stephen Jones told USA TODAY Sports: "It's sad. Very sad. It's tragic for everybody."

Brent and Brown both played at Illinois. Their careers overlapped from 2007-09 under former coach Ron Zook.

Tim Beckman, the current coach at Illinois, tweeted the news of Brown's death.

"Keep him in your prayers," Beckman wrote.

Brent, 24, is a former supplemental draft selection who has started five games this season in place of injured starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff. Brent was to start this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals but will not make the trip.
